I am writing this from American Legion Post 41 in Silver Spring MD where we are listening to Little Red and the Renegades, featuring Tom Coradino (a/k/a Little Red) and Harry Rado, both college classmates of Edie’s. They have been playing together for over 50 years. Almost 60, I guess. I have knowm for 50.
They still sound good (look them up on YouTube), but feel their age. The ability to play for 3 or 4 hours as they are almost ready to turn 80 is not something everyone can do.
We didn’t know what we were going to do today. The weather was very nice and we thought we would take a walk. But you know how it is. I thought we shouldn’t walk on an empty stomach, so we decided to look for a parking space, and found one on Mintwood Place NW. And, lo and behold, right next to our car was a restaurant with a large outdoor seating section and a lot of people eating. It turned out the restaurant, Lapis, was Afghan. And it turned out that we were the oldest customers by……at least 50 years. A very nice lunch, capped off by a shared piece of “pista”, a pistachio cream cake.

Following lunch, we took our walk. Well, you can’t really call it a walk. More like a very short half stroll. Three blocks down Columbia Road and 18th Street in Adams-Morgan.
But even a half stroll is interesting. We found a really good gift shop, Urban Dwell which had, among other nice items, a great selection of DC tagged gifts, much better than you get at the airport.

It’s right next to Washington’s tried and true athletic shoe store, Fleet Feet, and Adams-Morgan’s only kosher restaurant, Oh Mamma (closed for Shabbat and Yom Kippur).

But then to remind us we are in the inner city.

And then we saw this across the street:

A line of about 40 people patiently waiting notvfor a Taylor Swift concert or a Donald Trump rally, but for a sale at the Garlic Girl consignment shop. One out, one in. Go figure.
